She broke Jankovic twice to take a 5-4 lead in the second set before the Serb soldier, like Williams, the former world number one, broke in the 10th game to draw level 5-5.

Serving to save the match, Williams was on the ropes in the game on the 12th, but he saved three match points to force the decider.

Once she came out of it, skip the third, buoyed enthusiastic crowd.

Williams next faces Czech Lucie Safarova, a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 winner over American Coco Vandeweghe.

Safarova Vandeweghe denied the opportunity to avenge the loss of his semi final to Williams at the Australian Open, where Williams fell in the championship match her sister Serena.

Jankovic, meanwhile, could only regret missed opportunities, especially in his first match point that Williams saved winner Volley.

"When he was in the net was supposed to play a forehand cross, but played down the line with his right and made a winner," said Jankovic. "I had everything under control and I just let it slip away."
